Activity Description

Up to one-third of the world’s population reports dissatisfaction with their sleep, which can be categorized into short-term insomnia and chronic insomnia. Short-term insomnia affects approximately 10% to 15% of adults, with women being twice as likely to experience it compared to age-matched men. This condition is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or returning to sleep despite adequate opportunity. Symptoms typically last from a few days to several weeks, resulting in daytime impairments, including fatigue, reduced attention, and mood disturbances. Importantly, these symptoms are not attributed to underlying medical conditions, substance use, or medications.

The cause of short-term insomnia is multifactorial, involving environmental, genetic, psychological, and behavioral factors that contribute to a state of hyperarousal. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on a detailed sleep history and sleep diaries or logs collected over a period of 2 to 4 weeks. Polysomnography is occasionally used to rule out other sleep disorders. First-line treatment for short-term insomnia is non-pharmacological, including cognitive therapies, sleep restriction, stimulus control, and sleep hygiene education. These methods aim to improve sleep quality and reduce symptoms. Pharmacological treatments are generally not recommended unless necessary. This activity outlines the evaluation and management of short-term insomnia, emphasizing the crucial role of the healthcare team in diagnosing and treating patients with this condition. This activity also highlights the importance of collaboration among healthcare providers in improving sleep and enhancing overall patient well-being through the effective management of short-term insomnia.
