Activity Description

A skin biopsy is a fundamental diagnostic procedure in dermatology, providing valuable tissue samples for evaluating skin and systemic diseases with cutaneous manifestations. Techniques such as shave, punch, scissor, wedge, and excisional biopsies are selected based on lesion type, location, and depth. This course reviews proper site selection, specimen handling, and communication with pathology, which are critical to optimizing diagnostic yield while minimizing complications, eg, bleeding, scarring, or functional impairment. Participants will also gain an in-depth understanding of careful preprocedure evaluation, including history of bleeding disorders, medications, and allergies, which further enhances patient safety. Despite its routine use, performing biopsies requires thoughtful planning to strike a balance between diagnostic accuracy and cosmetic and functional outcomes.

This course explores skin biopsy indications, contraindications, and technique selection as well as biopsy planning, specimen handling, and complication prevention. Clinicians will enhance their ability to select the most appropriate biopsy method, ensure adequate tissue sampling, and improve interprofessional communication with pathologists. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in performing skin biopsies, including lesion selection, procedural methods, specimen handling, and postbiopsy care, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing dermatologic lesions, ultimately delivering safer, more precise, and patient-centered dermatologic care.
