Activity Description

Measles, or rubeola, is a highly contagious viral illness characterized by fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, and a distinctive rash. Despite being preventable through vaccination, measles continues to pose a significant global health threat, particularly in under-resourced regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia. The virus is transmitted via respiratory droplets and remains viable in the air or on surfaces for several hours. Although declared eliminated in the United States (US) in 2000 and the Americas in 2016, measles outbreaks persist due to international travel and transmission among unvaccinated populations. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 935 confirmed cases in the US in the first 4 months of 2025 alone, indicating a resurgence linked to gaps in vaccination coverage and global disease importation.

This educational activity provides healthcare professionals with updated knowledge on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of measles. Participants learn to recognize clinical features, implement appropriate infection control measures, and promote immunization strategies. Emphasis is placed on the critical role of interprofessional collaboration, as coordinated efforts among physicians, nurses, public health officials, and pharmacists significantly improve patient outcomes. Such teamwork ensures timely diagnosis, effective isolation protocols, and community-wide education, reducing disease spread and supporting long-term measles control.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Screen patients for potential measles exposure and vaccination status during routine and acute care visits.

  • Implement appropriate measles infection control measures to prevent nosocomial and community transmission.

  • Assess risk factors that increase susceptibility to measles, particularly in unvaccinated populations.

  • Coordinate care with interprofessional team members to ensure timely diagnosis, isolation, and follow-up for patients with measels.
