Activity Description

Pediatric brain tumors represent the most common type of solid malignancy in children and are the second most prevalent overall, following leukemia. In neonates and infants, these tumors pose unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to patient size, limited physiological reserves, and the potential long-term consequences of treatment. This activity explores neonatal and infant brain tumors, including key distinctions in tumor presentation, location, imaging characteristics, and management strategies compared to older pediatric populations.

This course examines the most common histological subtypes, such as teratomas, choroid plexus tumors, desmoplastic infantile tumors, glioblastoma multiforme, and atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors, as well as their associated radiographic findings. Risk factors, including genetic predisposition syndromes, parental age, prenatal exposures, prenatal detection methods, the prognostic impact of tumor histology and surgical resectability, and the emerging role of molecular diagnostics, are also outlined.

Participants will recognize early signs of congenital and infant brain tumors, interpret relevant imaging, weigh surgical and supportive care options, and contribute to interprofessional treatment planning. Emphasis will be placed on optimizing outcomes while minimizing treatment-related morbidities during this critical developmental period. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner's competence in identifying neonatal brain tumors, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Compare the imaging characteristics of various neonatal brain tumors.

  • Develop a differential diagnosis for neonatal brain tumors.

  • Identify treatment strategies for neonatal brain tumors.

  • Apply interprofessional team strategies to improve care coordination and outcomes for patients affected by neonatal brain tumors.
