Activity Description

The ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca compartment block is a regional anesthesia technique designed to provide targeted analgesia to the femoral, lateral femoral cutaneous, and obturator nerves by depositing local anesthetic beneath the fascia iliaca. This block is particularly effective for managing acute pain in lower extremity injuries such as hip fractures, femoral shaft fractures, and after hip or knee surgery. Using ultrasound guidance, clinicians can directly visualize anatomical landmarks, needle trajectory, and local anesthetic spread, increasing block success rates and minimizing complications. This approach offers a rapid, opioid-sparing alternative that improves patient comfort, facilitates earlier mobilization, and reduces the risks associated with systemic analgesics, especially in older adults or those with comorbidities.

By participating in this course, clinicians gain the knowledge and hands-on skills to confidently perform ultrasound-guided fascia iliaca compartment block in emergency, perioperative, and inpatient settings. They learn to identify sonoanatomy, select appropriate equipment, optimize local anesthetic dosing, and apply evidence-based techniques for safe and effective nerve blockade. Additionally, participants develop strategies for integrating fascia iliaca compartment block into multimodal pain management pathways, enhancing interprofessional communication, and coordinating postblock care. Ultimately, this training empowers clinicians to deliver superior, patient-centered pain control that improves outcomes, reduces opioid dependence, and elevates team performance.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify relevant anatomical landmarks, sonoanatomy, and nerve distributions targeted in the fascia iliaca compartment block.

  • Differentiate the fascia iliaca compartment block from other regional anesthesia techniques for lower extremity analgesia, including femoral nerve block and lumbar plexus block.

  • Implement aseptic technique, optimal patient positioning, and appropriate ultrasound-guided needle insertion methods.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team, including clinicians, nurses, and pharmacists, to integrate the block into multimodal pain management protocols.
