Activity Description

Thyroid disease in pregnancy represents a significant endocrine challenge, affecting maternal and fetal health. Conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and their subclinical variants arise from disruptions in thyroid hormone balance, which is vital for fetal neurodevelopment and maternal well-being. Pregnancy-induced physiological changes, including increased thyroid hormone production and iodine requirements, can obscure the diagnosis and management of thyroid dysfunction. If left untreated, these conditions increase the risk of complications such as preeclampsia, preterm labor, low birth weight, and cognitive impairments in the child. Early recognition and appropriate treatment of thyroid disease are essential to mitigate these risks and promote positive pregnancy outcomes.

This course provides participants with knowledge about the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based management of thyroid disease in pregnancy, emphasizes the interpretation of laboratory findings within the unique physiological context of pregnancy, and discusses strategies for managing overt and subclinical thyroid dysfunction. The course underscores the value of interprofessional collaboration, where the combined expertise of endocrinologists, obstetricians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals enhances patient outcomes. This collaborative approach facilitates comprehensive care, ensures timely interventions, and supports maternal and fetal health through coordinated diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring efforts.

One of the self assessment questions needs correction. A 22w pregnant patient cannot be at risk for miscarriage.
