Activity Description

Turner syndrome is a chromosomal disorder characterized by the partial or complete deletion of one X chromosome in individuals with a typically female phenotype. Nondisjunction or structural abnormalities of the X chromosome during meiosis are the most common causes. The condition arises sporadically, with no clearly established environmental risk factors. Advanced parental age is not considered a significant contributor.

The loss or alteration of X chromosome material interferes with normal development, particularly affecting growth and gonadal function. Clinical presentation often includes short stature, delayed puberty, primary amenorrhea, lymphedema at birth, and characteristic features, including a webbed neck and low-set ears.

The diagnosis is established through karyotype analysis prompted by clinical suspicion, often due to growth delay or physical findings. Management relies on an interprofessional approach involving growth hormone therapy, estrogen replacement, and regular screening for cardiac, renal, and endocrine abnormalities.

Common complications include infertility, congenital heart disease, hypertension, and autoimmune conditions. Favorable outcomes may be achieved through early diagnosis and comprehensive medical care, although long-term follow-up is generally necessary to monitor for associated health issues.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to sharpen learners' skills in evaluating and managing Turner syndrome. Participants broaden their understanding of the condition's etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation, with an emphasis on diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations. Improved proficiency enables clinicians to collaborate effectively within interprofessional teams caring for affected individuals.

  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to educate, treat, and monitor individuals with Turner syndrome to improve health outcomes.
