Activity Description

Although seat belts have prevented numerous deaths by reducing head injuries, they can also cause harm by transmitting force upon impact during the restraint of a passenger. Seat belt injury, also known as "seat belt syndrome," encompasses a range of common injury patterns associated with seat belt use. These injuries vary from bruising and abrasions along the seat belt's path, referred to as "seat belt signs," to more severe injuries such as intra-abdominal trauma, pneumothorax, and vertebral fractures. Potential complications include delayed bowel perforation, spinal cord injury, and chronic pain.

The diagnosis of seat belt injury involves a combination of clinical examination, identification of seat belt signs, and imaging studies, such as computed tomography scans, to assess for internal trauma. Management depends on the severity of the injuries and can range from observation and supportive care to surgical intervention for internal bleeding or organ damage. Prognosis varies, but outcomes are generally favorable with timely intervention; however, severe injuries may result in long-term disability. Prompt recognition and treatment are crucial in reducing morbidity and mortality. This activity focuses on evaluating and managing seat belt injuries, including the condition's etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and best diagnostic and therapeutic practices. This activity also highlights the importance of collaboration among the interprofessional healthcare team in caring for affected individuals.
